The Ultimate Getting Ready Guide: Stress-Free Mornings for Picture-Perfect Memories

Introduction: The Magic of the Morning

There’s something truly special about the morning of a wedding day. It’s a blend of nervous butterflies, laughter echoing down hallways, the scent of fresh coffee (or maybe a mimosa!), and the quiet anticipation of a life-changing moment just around the corner. As a wedding photographer, I get a front-row seat to these incredible hours—and let me tell you, they set the tone for everything that follows.

But here’s a little secret: the best, most heartfelt photos—the ones that make you smile for years to come—happen when you feel calm, comfortable, and present. That’s why a little thoughtful preparation can make all the difference. So let’s dive into how you can make your wedding morning not just smooth, but genuinely joyful (and, yes, photogenic!).

Why the “Getting Ready” Moments Matter

Before the vows, the first look, and the big celebration, there’s this beautiful bubble of time where you get to be surrounded by your favorite people. These are the moments when your mom helps you into your dress, your best friend cracks a joke to calm your nerves, or you share a quiet note with your soon-to-be spouse. These are the memories you’ll treasure—the ones that tell the real story of your day.

As your photographer, I want to capture all of it: the laughter, the happy tears, the last-minute pep talks, and even the silly dance moves with your crew. The more relaxed and organized your morning is, the more space there is for these authentic moments to shine.

Step 1: Choose the Right Space

Let’s start with where you’ll be getting ready. The location you choose can have a huge impact on your photos (and your mood!). Here’s what to look for:

Natural Light is Your Best Friend

If possible, pick a room with big windows and lots of natural light. Sunlight not only makes your skin look amazing, but it also gives your photos a soft, dreamy quality. If you’re getting ready in a hotel, ask for a corner suite or a room with plenty of windows.

Keep It Spacious (If You Can)

Weddings come with a lot of people—bridesmaids, groomsmen, parents, stylists, and, of course, your photographer and videographer. The more space you have, the less crowded and chaotic things will feel. If you’re getting ready at home, try to clear out a room or two so everyone has space to move and breathe.

Tidy Up (Just a Little!)

You don’t need to go full Marie Kondo, but a quick tidy can make a world of difference. Toss empty coffee cups, water bottles, and bags out of sight. If you’re in a hotel, designate a “stuff zone” for everyone’s bags and snacks—away from the windows and main action.

Step 2: Plan Your Timeline (and Build in Buffer Time!)

One of the biggest sources of wedding morning stress? Feeling rushed. Hair and makeup always take a little longer than expected, and before you know it, you’re running late for your first look or ceremony. Here’s how to stay ahead:

Start Early—But Not Too Early

Work with your hair and makeup team to create a realistic schedule. Ask them how long they need for each person, then add a little extra time—just in case. I always recommend being ready at least 30-45 minutes before you need to leave for your ceremony or first look. This gives you a cushion for any last-minute touch-ups, outfit changes, or just a moment to breathe.

Share the Schedule

Send your timeline to everyone involved—your wedding party, family, photographer, videographer, and stylists. Even a simple group text the night before can help everyone feel prepared and on the same page.

Don’t Forget Breakfast!

It’s easy to forget to eat when you’re excited (and maybe a little nervous), but trust me—having breakfast (and snacks!) on hand will keep your energy up. Assign someone to be the “snack captain” and make sure water, fruit, and easy bites are available.

Step 3: Set Aside a Spot for Details

Those dreamy flat lay photos you see on Pinterest? They don’t happen by accident! If you want beautiful shots of your invitations, rings, jewelry, perfume, and other special details, gather them all in one place the night before.

What to Include

  • Invitations (full suite if possible)
  • Both wedding rings and engagement ring
  • Jewelry (earrings, necklace, bracelets)
  • Perfume or cologne
  • Shoes
  • Hair accessories or veil
  • Family heirlooms (handkerchief, locket, etc.)
  • Vows or love notes
  • Any special keepsakes

Put everything in a box or bag and let your photographer know where to find it. This saves time and ensures nothing gets missed.

Step 4: Getting Ready—Together or Apart?

Decide early on if you want to get ready with your entire wedding party, just a few close friends, or even solo. There’s no right or wrong answer—just what feels most “you.”

With Your Crew

Getting ready with your bridesmaids or groomsmen can be a blast. There’s music, laughter, and plenty of support. If you go this route, remind everyone to be dressed (or at least mostly ready) before you get into your gown or suit—this way, everyone looks polished in those group shots.

With Family

Some couples love having a quiet moment with a parent or sibling. Whether it’s your mom helping with your dress or your dad tying your tie, these are the memories you’ll cherish most.

Solo Time

If you’re more introverted or just want a few minutes to yourself, carve out a little solo time before the festivities begin. Take a deep breath, write in your journal, or just sit quietly and soak it all in.

Step 5: The Little Things That Make a Big Difference

Here are a few more tips I’ve picked up after photographing dozens of weddings:

Wear a Button-Up or Robe

If you’re having your hair and makeup done, wear something that’s easy to take off without messing up your look. Matching robes or shirts also make for adorable photos!

Keep Your “Getting Ready” Playlist Handy

Music can help calm nerves and set a joyful tone. Make a playlist of your favorite songs (or ask your wedding party to contribute!) and let it play in the background.

Assign a “Point Person”

Designate someone—maybe your maid of honor or best man—to handle questions, phone calls, and last-minute details. This way, you can focus on enjoying your morning, not fielding logistics.

Have an Emergency Kit

Things happen! A little kit with safety pins, stain remover, tissues, a sewing kit, and extra bobby pins can save the day.

Step 6: Trust Your Team

You’ve hired talented professionals for a reason—let us do what we do best! Trust your hair and makeup artists, your photographer, and your videographer. We’re here to support you, keep things moving, and make sure you look and feel incredible.

If something runs a little late or doesn’t go exactly as planned, take a deep breath. The most magical moments often happen in the in-between—the unscripted, unexpected, perfectly imperfect seconds.

Real Wedding Morning Stories

A Quiet Moment with Dad:
One of my favorite memories is from a wedding last spring. The bride’s father had been quiet all morning, helping set up chairs and making coffee for everyone. Just before she put on her dress, he pulled her aside, handed her a letter, and told her how proud he was. She cried, he cried, I cried—and now, they have the most beautiful photos of that moment to treasure forever.

The Bridesmaids’ Dance Party:
Another wedding, the bridesmaids surprised the bride with a playlist of her favorite childhood songs. Suddenly, everyone was singing and dancing in their pajamas, and the energy in the room was pure joy. Those candid, laughter-filled photos are some of my favorites from the entire day.

Final Thoughts: Your Morning, Your Memories

Your wedding morning is more than just a checklist—it’s the beginning of a new chapter in your love story. Whether you’re surrounded by friends, sharing quiet moments with family, or taking time for yourself, these hours are yours to savor.

As your photographer, my biggest hope is that you’ll look back on your photos and remember not just how you looked, but how you felt—excited, loved, and completely yourself.

If you have questions about planning your wedding morning, want help building a timeline, or just need a little pep talk, I’m always here. Let’s make your big day as joyful and stress-free as possible—so you can focus on what matters most: celebrating your love.
