If you’ve ever scrolled through wedding galleries or Pinterest boards and found yourself swooning over those dreamy, artfully arranged shots of rings, invitations, and heirlooms—you’re not alone! As a photographer, I’m a firm believer that the little details are what make your wedding story feel personal, unique, and truly yours. These “flat lay” photos aren’t just pretty—they’re a snapshot of your love, your style, and the thought you’ve put into every part of your day.
But here’s the thing: those gorgeous detail shots don’t just happen by magic (though I like to think there’s a little magic in the air on wedding mornings). They happen because you, your planner, or your photographer have gathered the right pieces and carved out a few quiet moments to capture them. Today, I’m sharing everything you need to know about prepping your wedding details for photos—so you can relax, sip your coffee, and let me do the rest!
Before we dive into the checklist, let’s talk about why these images are so meaningful. Your wedding day is a whirlwind. There are hugs, happy tears, and a flurry of activity. It’s easy for the small things—the invitation you agonized over, your grandmother’s handkerchief, the perfume you picked just for this day—to get swept up in the excitement.
Flat lay photos are my way of honoring those choices. They’re a visual time capsule of your style, your story, and the love that went into planning your day. Years from now, when you look back at your album, you’ll see not just the big moments, but the little ones that made your wedding yours.
And let’s be honest: they’re also just plain beautiful!
Ready to make sure nothing gets missed? Here’s my tried-and-true list of details to gather for your wedding morning. Don’t worry—you don’t need every single item. Pick what feels meaningful to you!
You’ve gathered your treasures—now what? Here’s how to make the process easy for you, your planner, and your photographer (that’s me!).
The morning of your wedding is busy, and the last thing you want is to be hunting for your grandma’s locket or your partner’s cufflinks. Place all your chosen details in a box, bag, or basket and put it somewhere easy to find—maybe on the dresser, or with your dress or suit.
When I arrive, I’ll ask if you have your details ready. Point me in the right direction, and I’ll take it from there! If you have any items that are especially important or have a story, tell me about them—I love weaving those personal touches into your gallery.
If you have a planner or a super-organized friend, let them know where your details are. They can help make sure nothing gets misplaced and that everything is ready when I arrive.
You don’t need to have every single item on this list. What matters is what’s meaningful to you. If you forgot something, or if an item gets left behind, it’s okay! Your story will still shine through.
Here’s a little peek behind the scenes at how I create those magazine-worthy detail shots:
I look for a spot with beautiful natural light—maybe by a window, on a pretty table, or even on the floor if the carpet or wood is gorgeous. Sometimes, I’ll bring my own styling board or mat to create a clean backdrop.
This is the fun part! I’ll mix and match your items, layering invitations with ribbons, tucking in greenery from your bouquet, or adding a sprig of flowers from your florist. I love playing with color, texture, and shape to make each flat lay unique.
I photograph each arrangement from several angles, making sure to highlight the most important pieces. If you have special requests—like a shot of your grandmother’s ring with your bouquet—just let me know!
Once I’m finished, I carefully return every item to its box or bag. If you’re worried about anything delicate, let me know and I’ll handle it with extra care.
Let me share a couple of moments from past weddings that remind me why I love these photos so much:
One bride, Emily, included a tiny gold locket in her detail box. Inside was a photo of her late grandfather, who couldn’t be there in person. We made sure to photograph the locket with her bouquet and her invitation, and later, she wore it tucked into her dress. When she saw the photos, she told me it felt like he was part of her day after all.
Another couple, Sarah and Mike, wrote their vows by hand in matching blue notebooks. They also included baby photos of each other in their detail box—just for fun! Those photos, side by side, told a story of two lives coming together, and now they’re some of my favorite images from their gallery.
Want to take your flat lay photos to the next level? Here are a few pro tips:
A few loose blooms or greenery can add color and life to your detail photos. Most florists are happy to provide a handful of extras—just ask!
A pretty hanger for your dress or suit jacket instantly elevates those “getting ready” photos. Etsy has tons of personalized options, or you can go classic with a wooden or velvet hanger.
Invitations and programs look best when they’re crisp and wrinkle-free. If yours have been packed for a while, give them a gentle press (or ask your planner to help).
Don’t be afraid to include fun or quirky items—like your favorite book, a special charm, or even your pet’s collar tag if they’re part of your story!
Q: What if I forget something?
A: Don’t stress! Your wedding is about you and your love, not about having every single “Pinterest-perfect” detail. I’ll work with whatever you have and make it beautiful.
Q: Should I bring my own styling materials?
A: You don’t have to, but if you have ribbons, trays, or fabrics you love, feel free to include them. I also bring a few styling pieces to help create a cohesive look.
Q: Can I include digital or non-traditional items?
A: Absolutely! If you have a digital invite, a favorite playlist, or something unique to your relationship, let’s include it.
At the end of the day, your wedding details are about you—your journey, your family, your style. Whether you’ve collected heirlooms for years or you’re keeping things simple, what matters is that your details reflect your love story.
As your photographer, I’m honored to capture these little pieces of your day. If you have questions, want to brainstorm ideas, or need a printable checklist, just reach out! My goal is always to make your experience easy, joyful, and uniquely yours.
